Regions Survey Introduction
Windmill, Wessington Springs, South Dakota

Thanks for your interest in completing a survey for the Regions Project. The process takes about 15 minutes. We can't save partial surveys, so be sure to set aside enough time to complete it before beginning.

An outline of the survey process follows. For further information, please visit the Reports and More on the Project pages.

Here's an outline of what you'll be doing...

  1. The first step is to gather some basic information about you. This is not done to identify you personally - we do not need your name, phone number, email address, or anything like that. We are interested in some basic demographic information, to see if certain demographic groups share common ideas about the regional layout of the United States.
  2. You will draw regions on a map of the United States. You will be able to name these regions whatever you like, pick colors to represent them on the map, and draw them wherever you like.
  3. Next, we'll ask you three questions about each of the regions you created. The questions are "What is your impression of this region?", "How much time have you spent in this region?", and "How well do you feel you know this region?". Asking these questions helps us understand how people from certain parts of the country see other parts of the country.
  4. Finally, you will be asked to indicate what places you think have affected your views of the regional layout of the country. You may pick as many as you feel are appropriate. You may choose to select the area where you grew up, an area where you have lived for many years, or any other part of the country which has given you an understanding of the regional layout of the United States.

Once you're done, your contribution will become part of the Regions Project database. We will use it, along with submissions from other participants, to better understand our country and its people. Once enough submissions have been collected, we will begin publishing reports on whatever patterns we are able to find in all the survey data.

Thank you for your time and interest!

When you're ready, go ahead and start the survey.
